Clip merchant terminal instant payment interface

The Backstory

Meet Doña Rosa.

Doña Rosa runs a small taquería in Mexico. On a Tuesday morning, a customer paid with her Clip terminal. The transaction was instant. She had made the sale.

But the money wasn't really hers yet. She would have to wait three to five days before she could actually use it.

For a small business, that delay can matter. The money from today's sales might be needed to buy ingredients tomorrow, pay a supplier, or simply keep the business moving. And Doña Rosa wasn't alone.

Clip had built a fast way for merchants to accept money, but the money still had to travel through external banking systems before merchants could access it.

The real problem wasn't accepting payments. It was controlling what happened after the sale.

What We Built

01.

Make the money available when it matters

Merchants didn't need another way to see their sales. They needed access to the money they had already earned.

We designed instant access around the merchant's existing cash flow, not around the limitations of the banking system.

02.

Turn a payment product into a financial home

Instant earnings were only the beginning.

We designed a wallet experience that brought payments, transfers, purchases, and the physical card into one place.

03.

Unify the experience without hiding the complexity

Clip inherited a legacy wallet built for a different audience, with outdated interactions and separate product structures.

We unified the experience at the UX level while working within the legal boundaries that kept the underlying entities separate.

04.

Make compliance part of the experience

Financial regulation shaped what the product could do and how it could work.

I worked closely with legal, product, marketing, and engineering to make those constraints part of the experience rather than friction for the merchant.

The Outcome

01.

100K+ merchants

More than 100,000 merchants onboarded in the first release.

02.

Instant liquidity

The 3 to 5 day cash flow delay was removed from the merchant experience.

03.

One financial ecosystem

Payments, transfers, purchases, and the physical card came together in one wallet experience.

04.

A stronger reason to stay

Bringing financial services in house strengthened Clip's relationship with its merchants.

And for Doña Rosa

Doña Rosa didn't need another payment feature. She needed the money from today's work to be available when tomorrow arrived.

For merchants like Doña Rosa, the wait didn't just get shorter. It disappeared.

The project wasn't just about making payments faster. It was about giving merchants more control over what happened after the sale.
